A poinsettia makes a floral gift as popular as it is symbolic. But it’s more than just a colourful houseplant. Its star-shaped bracts also make it a symbol of Christmas. The poinsettia symbolises love, hope and peace. As a gift, it expresses appreciation and warmth. This is all the more true when it forms part of a homemade arrangement. The experts at Stars for Europe (SfE) showcase creative gift ideas for every taste, featuring poinsettias.
Homemade poinsettia flower bowls
A poinsettia in a homemade flower bowl is a beautiful gift which can easily be tailored to the personal taste of the recipient.
This bowl made from old book pages is the ultimate gift idea for all bookworms. With a polystyrene hemisphere, cling film, an old book, paste and a paintbrush, you can create this unique project in just a few steps. A poinsettia, candle, wooden star and cones are the perfect finishing touches to the gift.
Here’s how to make it: Wrap the hemisphere with cling film. Remove the pages from the book and tear them into small pieces. Coat the pieces with paste and stick them onto the hemisphere one by one until it’s completely covered with several layers of paper.
Leave to dry. Carefully remove the dried paper shell from the hemisphere. Place the poinsettia and pot inside a vase or planter and sit it in the paper bowl. Cover any gaps with moss and pine sprigs and arrange the filled bowl on a plate or tray with a candle and some cones.
Tip: The bowl will last longer if you seal it with clear varnish on the inside!
A poinsettia in a bowl made from nuts and cones is a great gift idea for anyone who loves nature. This rustic DIY container is simple to make.
You’ll need a poinsettia, posing compost, a polystyrene bowl, hazelnuts and walnuts, cones, a hot glue gun and glue sticks, moss, mossing pins, cord and a decorative wooden star.
Here’s how to make it: Attach the moss to the outside of the polystyrene bowl using the mossing pins.
Then stick the nuts and cones close together on the moss, fill the bowl with compost and plant the poinsettia inside. Finally, attach the star to the arrangement with the cord. Done!
Poinsettia tray displays
A poinsettia arrangement on a tray is a quick gift idea you can easily adapt to any taste and interior style by choosing different colours and accessories.
In this modern Scandi-style display on the left , the salmon mini poinsettias and retro Christmas bauble create a charming contrast to the blue, grey and yellow pillar candle and the vibrant blue tray.
At the heart of this craft project on the right is a homemade greenhouse using from twigs that have been glued together. This forms the frame for an arrangement of a red poinsettia, mini pine tree, moss, cones and succulent (Echeveria). In a bright location, protected from draughts, this decorative idea will look great for weeks.
Advent poinsettia arrangements
If you’re looking for a floral gift that will be remembered by the recipient for a long time, we recommend a homemade Advent poinsettia arrangement. It’ll be on show for at least 24 days so will last much longer than any bouquet of flowers.
An Advent display, featuring a calendar candle in a bowl of mini poinsettias, makes a lovely gift idea you can create in no time. Adding a layer of drainage to the bottom of the bowl helps prevent waterlogging. Wax stickers are ideal for fixing the candle in place.
Tip: Alternatively, you can create this arrangement with floral foam and cut poinsettias.
Instead of a bowl, you could also create an Advent arrangement using a Christmas biscuit tin. For this DIY floral display, you will need a metal biscuit (or other) tin, two mini poinsettias, a matching Advent calendar candle, three small planters, clay, moss, spruce and juniper branches, secateurs, reel wire, small cones and golden Christmas baubles.
Step 1: Fill one of the small planters with clay and place the Advent calendar candle in it. Place the mini poinsettias in the other two planters and arrange all three in the tin.
Step 2: Fill the spaces in between with moss, spruce and juniper branches.
Step 3: Wire the cones and insert them between the green branches.
Step 4: Decorate the arrangement with gold baubles.
Tip: Ideally, give the mini poinsettias a tiny amount of lukewarm water every day to avoid waterlogging!
This will keep these little plants looking beautiful throughout the Christmas season.
Naturally festive: Christmas arrangement in tranquil tones
This poinsettia display is the perfect gift for nature lovers who appreciate something special. It’s easier to make than it looks. To frame the poinsettia, place it and its planter on a log slice.
Cut a metal hoop and insert each end into pre-drilled holes on either side of the log slice. Cover the top of the ring with wild clematis vine (Clematis vitabla).
Loosely wrap the lower part of the hoop with chicken wire, then wrap the wire with moss and decorate with natural materials of your choice. A decorative star adds the finishing touch to this craft idea.
Poinsettia gift boxes and baskets
A lovingly planted basket is not only a welcome gift at Easter. It can also make plant lovers happy at Christmastime. On the left , red poinsettias have been combined with dwarf Alberta spruce trees (Picea glauca ‘Conica’), hyacinths and red checkerberry (Gaultheria) to create a charming Christmas arrangement.
For this gorgeous Christmas arrangement on the right , an old wooden toolbox has been given a fresh coat of paint and planted up with bright red poinsettias, dwarf Alberta spruce trees (Picea glauca ‘Conica’), hyacinths and red checkerberry (Gaultheria). It’s an eye-catching centrepiece and great gift idea that, with the right care, will provide weeks of enjoyment.
A filled ‘Christmas Market To Go’ box makes a personalised gift idea for the festive season. In addition to Christmas treats, baubles and a festive candle, it shouldn’t be without a beautifully blooming poinsettia.
Tip: Poinsettias don’t like cold or draughts, so wrap the plant up nice and warm for transport.
