Flowers make people happy which is why they’re popular as gifts all year round. Although poinsettias are not strictly speaking flowers, their bright, flower-like bracts make them a great alternative in autumn and winter. These winter flowering plants come in a wide range of colours, shapes and sizes and work equally well as potted plants or cut flowers. This means the DIY ideas and arrangements you can make using poinsettias are just as varied. The experts at Stars for Europe (SfE) share gift ideas with poinsettias that bring colour and joy into the darker months and will certainly please any flower lover.
Nut poinsettia flower holder
Nuts are as much a part of Advent and Christmas as poinsettias. These decorative fruits with their hard shells are not only a popular snack, they’re also perfect for handicrafts.
They can be used to make decorative DIY flower holders, for example. Finished with cut poinsettias, they make a fantastic gift idea.
For this decorative design, you need mixed nuts, a hot glue gun, hot glue, test tubes or flower tubes, pine sprigs, small cones, pearl head pins and poinsettias.
Here’s how to make it: Glue the nuts together, so they form a tapered tower with an opening in the middle for a test tube or flower tube.
Allow the glue to dry then decorate the nut tower with cones, pearl head pins and springs of pine.
Finally, fill the test tube/flower tube with water and place a cut poinsettia in it.
Tip: Immediately after cutting, dip the poinsettia stem into hot water (approx. 60°C) for a few seconds and then into cold water. In clean water it will stay fresh for up to two weeks.
Poinsettia in a cuddly outfit
Cosy fleece covers transform plain planters and glass vases into charming pieces to show off cream poinsettias or candles. For this straightforward upcycled gift, you will need old planters or glass vases, discarded clothes with a cosy feel, scissors, glue gun and hot glue, buttons, poinsettia plants and candles.
Here’s how to make it: Use the scissors to cut out pieces of clothing slightly longer than the length of your vase/planter’s circumference. Use hot glue to stick the fabric onto your containers and decorate them with buttons.
If you use a section of a sleeve, simply pull it over the container. Finally, place the poinsettia or candle in the upcycled pot and put your finished piece wherever you like.
Tip: For a more colourful look, choose bright clothes with matching candles and poinsettias.
Tray displays of poinsettias to suit all tastes
A tray with your own poinsettia arrangement on makes a quick gift idea you can easily adapt to any taste and style of interior with your choice of colours and accessories.
Retro fans will love this arrangement in shades of red and gold. A handful of vintage-style Christmas decorations lie on the dainty tray next to a bright red poinsettia in a gold planter.
Below left , a wicker tray densely packed with red mini poinsettias is a brilliant gift idea for those who love to keep it natural. It fits perfectly with the on-trend cottagecore style too. Choose poinsettia varieties with different leaf shapes and shades of red to add variety to your arrangement.
Different sizes of two-tone poinsettias in pink and cream, along with candles, baubles and gilded cones on a round wooden tray form an ensemble that is both elegant and harmonious.
This striking natural arrangement on a rectangular wooden tray consists of a number of cones and brown glass vases, filled with cut red poinsettias, a stem of an ornamental apple and evergreen foliage. Tip: Combine poinsettia varieties with differently shaped bracts to make your arrangement even more interesting.
Poinsettia flower arrangements
Instead of a potted plant or a bouquet, you can also delight flower lovers with a floral arrangement. Cut poinsettias are an ideal choice for this. They will stay fresh for up to two weeks if, immediately after cutting, you dip the stems in hot water (about 60°C) for a few seconds and then in cold water.
A bowl decorated with poinsettias, gilded twigs, a candle and Christmas baubles is sure to create a festive mood. This elegant arrangement is quick to create: Soak flower foam and place it in the bowl. Wire the candle and insert it into the foam, together with gilded twigs and cut poinsettias. Finally, finish off your arrangement with baubles.
Pink cut poinsettias make this arrangement (right) a beautiful gift as well as a romantic centrepiece throughout autumn and winter. You can make this design in no time: soak fresh flower foam in water and place it in a bowl. Wire the candle and fix it in the middle. Then insert pine branches and cut poinsettias into the foam around the candle. Done!
