Poinsettias are absolute stars, not only during Advent and Christmas. These gorgeous plants are also much in demand as autumn decor. The warm colours of their bright bracts enhance any interior and provide a sense of wellbeing and a positive mood on autumn days. These versatile plants also fit effortlessly into any style of interior. The experts at Stars for Europe (SfE) showcase their autumn displays featuring poinsettias, to make grey days less dreary and to give gloomy thoughts zero chance.
The autumn dream team: poinsettias and pumpkins
Pumpkins are considered the autumn accessory of choice. In their many different colours, shapes and sizes, these fruits look even better in combination with poinsettias. From the end of October, you can find poinsettias everywhere in specialist retailers. The variety is traditionally widest around Halloween.
Poinsettias in colours such as salmon, cinnamon or apricot are ideal for autumn displays. Paired with pumpkins, they create a tonal blend of colours that brings a cheerful atmosphere to any room. These easy-care plants can also be used as Halloween decorations. A lush poinsettia looks fantastic in this grinning orange pumpkin planter. Its dense foliage and colourful bracts above the pumpkin’s face look like a luxuriant head of hair.
Cottagecore chic with soft pastel poinsettias
In delicate pastel shades and soft cream, poinsettias go perfectly with a romantic cottagecore interior.
Mini poinsettias in pink and cream look stunning in the crocheted basket.
Tip: To avoid water leaking out or your plants becoming waterlogged, line the inside of the basket with waterproof sheeting and water your plants in small doses.
This pretty poinsettia duo is also a real attention-grabber with its two-tone bracts in pastel shades.
Apricot poinsettias form a decorative still life with antique books and vintage accessories. Important: To thrive, poinsettias need a bright, warm spot protected from draughts. If your plants are in the wrong place, they will react by shedding their leaves.
Soft pastel shades also feature heavily in this unusual bouquet of cut poinsettias, pine sprigs, eucalyptus, coloured asparagus and various dried florals.
As cut flowers, poinsettias are impressive with their huge, brightly coloured mock petals. The size of the beautiful bracts alone means you don’t need any other blooms.
Tip: Immediately after cutting, dip the poinsettia stems in hot water (approx. 60°C) for a few seconds and then in cold water. In clean water they will stay fresh for up to two weeks.
Modern living with poinsettias and foliage plants
Poinsettias make great houseplants that add colourful accents in autumn and winter and go well with other indoor plants. In this loft-style interior, poinsettias in different colours and sizes create a homely atmosphere. Large foliage plants highlight the exotic feel and boost the room’s feel-good factor.
A densely planted bowl placed on the floor in the middle of the room is a fantastic focal point. For this modern arrangement, red poinsettias have been combined with elephant ear (Alocasia zebrina), ornamental asparagus (Asparagus plumosus), painted leaf begonias (Begonia rex ‘Indian Summer’), necklace plant (Dischidia nummularia) and Philodendron ‘Prince of Orange’.
In this striking wall display on the left , poinsettias and foliage plants transform vertical planter boxes into living art. This creative composition consists of bright red poinsettias, nerve plants (Fittonia verschaffeltii), arrowhead plants (Syngonium), inch plants (Tradescantia fluminensis tricolor), ornamental asparagus (Asparagus densiflorus ‘Meyeri’), sugar vine (Parthenocissus striata) and heart fern (Hemionitis arifolia).
Cut poinsettias also look dramatic as cut flowers in this arrangement on the right . Together with anthuriums (Anthurium andraeanum), Vanda orchids (Vanda), wild asparagus (Asparagus acutifolius), dried scabious seedheads (Scabiosa stellata), protea (Protea neriifolia), silver tree (Leucadendron ‘Safari Sunset’) and other florals they make a stunning combination.
Tip: Cut poinsettias will last for up to two weeks if the cut stem ends are immersed in hot water (approx. 60°C) for a few seconds and then in cold water.
