Festive poinsettia hanging decorations. Craft ideas for magical, star-filled suspended designs

Hanging decorations attached to ceilings, walls or doorframes create attention-grabbing displays at eye level adding an extra dimension to your seasonal decor. At Christmas, hanging floral arrangements featuring vibrant poinsettias are a space-saving, aesthetic way to create a festive atmosphere. The experts at Stars for Europe (SfE) share rustic, elegant craft ideas for the festive season that are easy to create and add a personal touch to any room.

Natural wreath with poinsettia kokedamas

In winter, the sight of a decorative door wreath made from natural materials lifts the spirits and gives guests a warm welcome. Kokedamas made with colourful mini poinsettias add a festive touch to indoor wreaths, as it’s too cold outside for these plants.

To make the kokedamas, wrap the root balls of the mini plants in moss, securing it in place with natural raffia, and attach the finished kokedamas to the wreath at different heights.

Tip: Hang the wreath in a place sheltered from the cold and draughts and water these tiny plants regularly from above with a little room temperature water.

Rustic poinsettia twig star

A rustic, festive twig star, with red and salmon mini poinsettias attached, hangs from a red wooden door.

Sometimes less is more: in this natural, homemade hanging arrangement, three mini poinsettia kokedamas embellish a star made of twigs. The imperfect shape of this construction makes the colourful poinsettias stand out all the more and gives this craft idea its own special charm. This decoration is so easy to make.

For this perfectly imperfect idea, made from natural materials, you will need five branches of roughly the same length, twine, scissors, golden craft wire, moss and three mini poinsettias.

Step 1: Make a five-pointed star from the twigs, then tie them together with the twine at the five outer and inner crossing points. Tip: For more stability, you can also secure the twigs at the crossing points with hot glue.

Step 2: Remove the mini poinsettias from their pots, wrap the root balls with moss and secure it with the golden craft wire. Tip: Soak the plants in water beforehand so they are fully hydrated.

Step 3: Attach the poinsettia kokedamas to different parts of the twig star, using more wire.

Materials for a craft project: twigs, red and salmon mini poinsettias, string, scissors and moss, all on a beige background.

Step 4: Hang your rustic, colourful mini poinsettia display in a bright spot away from draughts.

Tip: Water the plants regularly from above with a small amount of water. Alternatively, carefully remove the kokedamas every few days and place them in a container with a little lukewarm water so the moss can soak it up. Allow to drain well before rehanging.

Hanging festive poinsettia basket design

This extra-large hanging arrangement makes a festive focal point with rustic charm and it’s easy to make in just a few steps.

Simply attach a beautiful poinsettia in its planter to the bottom of a wicker basket with hot glue and suspend the basket from the ceiling with strong cord so it hangs securely with the opening on one side.

Then, fill the space around the poinsettia up to the halfway point of the basket with various evergreen branches, cones and Christmas baubles, using hot glue to secure them in place.

Art Deco Christmas branch: a stylish hanging decoration

This design, featuring cut poinsettias, stands out beautifully against the white wallpaper with its subtle gold, geometric pattern. The hanging, made of copper-sprayed switch grass (Panicum virgatum), pussy willow (Salix caprea) stems and acacia (Acacia baileyana) is tied together and decorated with apricot poinsettias and Scandi Christmas decorations.

Elegant bead ring with cut poinsettias

This homemade hanging design, made from natural wooden beads, gold baubles and cut cream poinsettias, will add a touch of luxury to any home.

Whether on an inside door, above the dining table or in front of a window, individually or in groups, its a festive focal point with a retro feel, that adds a  glamorous touch anywhere. Complete this deco idea in just a few steps.

For this elegant poinsettia hanging you will need a decorative natural wooden bead hoop of 25-30cm diameter (you can buy these ready-made), a kebab stick, a hot glue gun and glue sticks, a selection of golden baubles in different designs and sizes, a cream poinsettia, secateurs, dried flowers and a watering can.

You will also need two glasses, one filled with hot water (about 60°C) and one with cold water.

A finished wooden bead wreath hangs on a door, decorated with gold baubles and creamy-yellow poinsettias.

Step 1: Cut the kebab stick to the size of the hoop diameter. Place it across the centre of the hoop and, using hot glue, attach each end to the sides of the hoop between the beads.

Step 2: Remove the caps from the baubles and glue the baubles next to each other on the front of the kebab stick with the opening facing upwards. Allow the glue to set.

Step 3: Fill the smaller baubles with dried flowers.

Step 4: Using the watering can, fill the larger baubles with room temperature water.

Step 5: From the poinsettia plant, cut individual stems with the most beautiful bracts. To stop the flow of milky sap, immediately after cutting, first place the cut ends in the glass of hot water for about five seconds, then plunge immediately into the cold water. Then insert the poinsettia stems into the larger, water-filled baubles.

Step 6: Hang the finished design in a suitable spot. Tip: For greater impact, hang several rings next to each other.
