Poinsettias have long been more than just a classic living room decoration for the festive season. In soft pastel shades, bright red or elegant cream, they add atmospheric touches and create a cosy feel – even where you wouldn’t expect them: in a bedroom, bathroom or hallway. Whether an oriental look, Nordic understatement or Mexican riot of colour, poinsettias fit every style, inspire creative craft projects and bring an extra dose of winter magic to any room. The experts at Stars for Europe (SfE) share a variety of design ideas using this beautiful winter bloomer.
A thousand and one nights with colourful poinsettias
Poinsettias are showing their oriental side this winter: Combined with gold accessories, rich colours and detailed patterns, they create a look that brings warmth, elegance and a touch of the Arabian Nights to the darker months.

On the left, poinsettias in vibrant pink and soft cream add a stylish touch to this oriental-inspired living room and complement its warm tones perfectly.
Different heights and luxury pots emphasise the effect, while gold details, candlelight and an elephant ear kalanchoe create an elegant atmosphere.
In this artfully arranged bouquet on the right, cut poinsettias in soft apricot and cream tones meet the richly textured variety of winterberry (Ilex verticillata), dried globe amaranth (Gomphrena), dried bunny tail grass (Lagurus), eucalyptus, juniper (Juniperus communis) and skimmia (Skimmia japonica), all in a vase covered with dried strawflowers (Xerochrysum bracteatum).
This arrangement of fresh and dried materials combines warm colours, natural textures and golden accents to create an exotic, festive feel.

In this arrangement on the left, poinsettias in apricot, cream and pink harmonise perfectly with decorative foliage and trailing greenery.
The dark purple leaves of a tradescantia and the silvery-green rosettes of a succulent (Echeveria) create an opulent feature in a large bowl. Sprigs of trailing cypress add a natural lightness to the arrangement.
The combination of colours, textures and shapes is elegant and works perfectly with an oriental living space.
Added comforts in the bathroom and bedroom

Bedrooms and bathrooms are at-home retreats – spaces where you can find peace and quiet and be at one with yourself.
Details that add warmth and comfort are all the more important here. Poinsettias, with their soft colours and quiet beauty, create precisely this soothing atmosphere and lend a special cosiness to the most private areas of the home.
Aside from just living rooms, poinsettias will thrive anywhere, provided they are protected from draughts, there’s plenty of daylight and the temperature is between 15-22°C.
Right: Poinsettias in cream and white, combined with warm natural tones, add a festive touch to this dressing table and create a cosy atmosphere.
To decorate a mirror, shape juniper, berried eucalyptus or other evergreen foliage into a garland and attach it to the mirror.
A test tube holding a cut poinsettia completes the arrangement.

A bouquet of cut poinsettias in soft apricot and cream tones, berried eucalyptus, fresh winterberry (Ilex verticillata) and fluffy cotton stems brings winter elegance to this bathroom.
Matching mirror decorations of juniper, berried eucalyptus or other evergreen foliage are formed into a garland and attached to one corner of the mirror.
Cut poinsettias in small test tubes of water add a festive touch.
Tip: Cut poinsettias will last for up to two weeks if the cut ends are dipped in hot water at around 60°C for a few seconds immediately after cutting, then in cold water, and then given fresh water regularly.
As Christmas approaches, a bedroom can be festive too, with a decorated mini Christmas tree, soft twinkling lights and lovingly wrapped presents. Giving gifts in this personal space becomes a very special moment. Poinsettias in warm apricot shades add to the peaceful atmosphere and bring a touch of festive magic to the place where the day begins and ends.

A starry welcome: poinsettias for hallways and foyers

First impressions are not made in the living room, but between the front door and the cloakroom.
Poinsettias can transform hallways and foyers into welcoming reception areas – discreetly, colourfully or in a surprising way.
Left: Cream poinsettias in rattan baskets, warm wood tones and soft textiles create a cosy atmosphere.
The simple coat rack holds a poinsettia, Christmas decorations and a string of lights. It adds a festive touch to the entrance area.
Right: Creamy-white poinsettias, both cut and potted, decorate this banister and gifts.
A garland of pine greenery, ornate paper stars and simple natural materials creates a Nordic Christmas mood.
Cosy fur mittens filled with red and white speckled mini poinsettias, evergreen foliage and pine cones add a sophisticated winter touch to a rustic coat rack.
Gold accessories and bows provide festive details. Tip: To keep the mittens clean, place the poinsettias and foliage in small freezer bags.

A poinsettia also make a festive feature in a hallway as a hanging door decorations in a flat woven wood basket.
Important: Poinsettias do not like draughts, so the experts at SfE advise against placing them too close to the front door.
Fiesta Mexicana: An exotic feel with colourful poinsettias

With their bright colours, poinsettias have a tropical feel and exude pure joie de vivre.
These plants, with their Mexican roots, bring a little sunshine into the darker months.
Whether in fiery red, soft apricot or vibrant pink, these magnificent winter flowers create a vibrant mood and work perfectly with exotic plants such as palms or cacti.
Bold colours, natural materials and striking patterns create a look inspired by the Mexican lifestyle – vibrant and surprisingly versatile.

These homemade wall displays on the left are reminiscent of traditional sombreros with their bold colours and circular shapes.
As well as being an eye-catching feature, these wrapped designs also serve as holders for mini poinsettias, creating bright accents – a creative craft project that perfectly combines beautiful poinsettias and design.
You will need four mini poinsettias in different colours, four small terracotta pots, four large wooden rings, four small corrugated wire rings, craft wire, wire cutters, twine in different colours and paper-covered craft wire.
Here’s how it’s done:
Step 1: Connect the wooden ring and the corrugated wire ring with the craft wire. Use different lengths of wire to create an asymmetrical base.
Step 2: Wrap twine in different colours around the wooden and corrugated wire rings until both are completely covered. By changing the colours you create a patterned ring with a textile-like appearance.
Step 3: Attach the terracotta pot to the twine-wrapped ring with the paper-covered craft wire. Make sure the pot is straight and secure.

Step 4: Place the potted mini poinsettias in the clay pots. Repeat steps 1-4 with the other three rings.
Step 5: Hang the finished rings on the wall. Tip: Use small hooks or a sturdy piece of string to attach them to the wall.
These colourful wrapped rings look best in a group.
